Inside IRAN's underground billion-dollar art gallery
It's one of the finest collections of modern art anywhere in the world, but you won't find it in New York or Paris.
Dozens of works by the likes of Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol and Jackson Pollock — together valued at roughly $3 billion — are locked

Most museums don’t have a fraction of the space needed to display all of their acquired works so they usually rotate them. Some lesser-known pieces may never get out into the public. There are wealthy private collectors that purchase just for the sake of acquiring, and then they put them in storage never to be seen. Art is created to be seen and enjoyed not collected and stored! I am glad to see that the Iranian collection was not damaged or destroyed though in past years. Let’s hope that one day it does get back on public display. Maybe it will help ease their distaste for the West?

I totally agree with you, I don't know what their reasoning is from keeping from the public. The public pays for these treasures but it is rare when they display some of these great pieces of art.

I do find it interesting, that the same is the case for museums around the world. Most art acquired by museums in the world is stored away, and is rarely put on display. But one could argue it is safer in storage. Maybe so, but what purpose does it serve in a basement? It becomes a just a treasure of monetary value.
