REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE
When we don't recycle, we're wasting precious resources. But when we do,
it's amazing what they can be made into.
INTRODUCTION
Is there something in your rubbish bin that isn't really rubbish?
Chances are, yes.
If you look carefully, most of what you put in the rubbish bin can be reused or recycled into new
products. In fact, the importance of practicing the '3 Rs' cannot be underestimated.
By reducing, reusing and recycling, you can conserve natural resources and help maintain a
clean and green living environment.
As the saying goes, 'a little bit goes a long way'. Purchase only what you need, reuse what you
have and recycle the recyclable materials.
Let’s Get Started . . .
REDUCE
Less is best! Reducing waste is easy – it can take place at home or in the office.
Here are some ideas to get you started
Things you can do in the Office :
- Use email to send messages or write memos instead of making a copy for each person.
- Do not print emails unless it is necessary
- Proofread documents on the computer screen before printing. This helps reduce paper waste.
- Use one sided printed paper for draft.
- Use duplex option for Printing.
- Print addresses directly onto envelopes instead of using sticker labels.
- When buying lunch back to the office, try not to ask for a plastic bag
REUSE
Once is not enough! Think twice before throwing things away.
For instance, use a plastic food container to hold/keep your food,
or find a new use for a glass jar, such as a saltshaker.
Endless possibilities abound. You'll be amazed at what a simple
item can be turned into once you've called on your creativity
Things you can do in the Office
- Everyone can play a part! Start a paper recycling drive in the office
- When packing breakfast or lunch, use reusable containers
- Consider purchasing refillable stationery such as mechanical pencils and refillable pens
- Why waste paper and add bulk when you can make double-sided copies instead?
- Similarly, use scrap paper to draft documents
- Save and reuse envelopes for internal mail
RECYCLE
When all has been done to reduce and reuse, recycle! You can play
your part by making a conscious effort to recycle and to buy recycled products.
Recycling is easy. You can participate in your neighbourhood recycling programme
by depositing recyclable items such as waste paper, glass bottles, drink cans and
plastic bottles into recycling bags or deposit these recyclables into designated recycling bins.
You can also set up a recycling programme or environmental club at the school or office to promote
the recycling effort.
Every tonne of paper recycled can save 17 trees while recycling one aluminium can will save enough
energy to keep a 100 watt light bulb burning for three and a half hours.
So why wait?
Start recycling today.
CONCLUSION
It is easy to be green !
REDUCE - REUSE - RECYCLE
PRACTICING THE '3 R'S IS NOT DIFFICULT. IN FACT, IT MAY ALREADY BE PART OF
YOUR DAILY ROUTINE.
START BY ASKING YOURSELVES WHETHER YOU NEED SOMETHING BEFORE BUYING IT.
ALSO, MANY THINGS THAT WE THROW AWAY CAN BE REUSED OR ITS USEFUL LIFE
EXTENDED BY RECYCLING IT.
SO, THINK BEFORE YOU THROW. YOU NEVER KNOW
WHEN YOUR TRASH MAY TURN INTO TREASURE
