I do graphic illustration and design, but i really need to get back to doing 3D work. Thats where the moneys at!  I've been working freelance in the tee shirt design field and its very hard to maintain a steady pay check. SO, back to school!! ha ha

Freelance is tough. I've been doing it for a few years as a side job, but I left a full time gig at a publishing company after 2 and a half years to work freelance full time. I had a few opportunites in the film industry that were available to me, so I went for it.

In retrospect, I kind of wish I had thought that decision through a little better.

But, like I told my wife, if it doesn't work out, I'll just get a new job. She supports my decision and I just have to keep moving forward.

Freelancers...HOLD ON TIGHT! IT AINT EASY! Word of mouth  has been my best advertising lately. I have a lot of repeat clients as well. Treat your clients well, and keep them very happy. There are lots of cut throat designers out there right now. Do not give them a chance to move in on your work. Keeps your Peeps happy. And be grateful for each and every job you get.

Any designer can get a job done...Dont do it like ANYONE else. BEST OF LUCK TO YOU ALL.

Thanks jimmi. Great advice, seriously.

That's been my thinking for awhile now: Don't do it like ANYONE else. Offer something that nobody else does. A style, a way of thinking, a way of doing business, anything to set yourself apart from others.

I agree with Jimmi. You got to think outside of the box. Make yourself noticed and sell yourself bigtime.

Hello all my name is Seana and I'm new here. Like you guys I'm in the freelancing business and you're absolutely right.  It ain't easy out there...But I try to remain positive and that's as easy as finding a needle in a haystack. I'm ready to go back to school myself if I can get my hands on a lot of money...

Well, all I can say is freelancing is an increasingly tough business to be in.

sigh.

How to distinguish yourself in the crowd? Not easy these days, given all the dust the 'herd' kicks up. Networking, exercise your contacts, always keep a copy of your portfolio with you - you just never know!

I've been freelancing for over 4 years now.  It was great when I started.  I was working with alot of agencies and was never out of work for more than a week or two. This last year I have only got one job that lasted only one month. I had to go on unemployment for the first time since I became a graphic designer 20 years ago. Tough isn't the word for it!!!  I have a few jobs through word of mouth right now but nothing to really pay the bills.  Last year when I saw this coming I decided to pursue another love of mine which is working with animals.  Last month I became a certified dog trainer.  Today I was offered a job with Petco and took it.  I will still be freelancing through word of mouth but I have to do whatever I can to pay the bills.

By the way....this is just my story.  I am in no way telling anyone to give up on the design bizz.  It's still my passion and will always have it in my life one way or another.

I wish everyone the best of luck out there.  Always remember to follow your dreams.

I stand by word of mouth and a strong online portfolio where potential clients and peruse your work before even meeting you. Freelancing is tough... but once you develop a strong clientele you should be golden
