I’m working towards becoming a graphic designer. I'm finishing my first semester at AACC for a Graphic Design Certificate (hopefully a degree later on). I’m reading some photoshop tutorials and checking out other graphic desigers’ works. Do any experienced designers have tips for upcoming graphic designers, such as if I’m on the right track and how can I improve my eye for design, creativity, imagination, etc?

Graphic Design is a real tough field right now. I suggest exploring 3d animation and or web design. This is where the work and money is.

Graphic design is everywhere. You''ll do fine if you are good and if you are persistent. 3D animation is limited to a few locations (mainly San Francisco) if you want to play with the big guns.

There will always be graphic design work. You just have to go out and get the work. That's the toughest part. Don't be discouraged by PatM keep on going. Just keep your eyes open for any opportunities that come your way. and keep your eyes on the trends. He's right that animation and web design are huge, but graphics are still needed.

My only comment about your artwork is to keep practicing. Try to stay away from the filters and effects and learn to draw with photoshop. Learn from your classmates, and other designers in the field.

Palooch is right. It is out there if you look. I was not trying to discourage you just being truthful as to the availabilty of stable graphics jobs. It is my opinion that as a student you should be searching for a stable job rather than starting out as a freelance designer. Yes you can make a living at freelancing but a stable environment will help you gain both knowledge and experience and forify you resume.

I am in my third year studying computer animation and graphic design. What I do while I am in school is for every assignment, I create it to my very best ability and I use the best work for my portfolio. By the time you get out of school, you should have a lot of art examples to show. I also offer my artistic abilities to friends and family to gain experience. For example, two seperate realitives needed an original logo design which I created for them. I Network in places such as this as well as other artist networks that allow me to upload my artwork. I don't have all of my artwork on this site yet but I will soon. I also look into career oppertunities that I want to one day work in and look at what it is that I will need to know such as software etc. As a Graphic Designer, you may have web design and Flash cources that you will soon learn and that is where the money is. At this time, I am in the process of creating my own personial web site which you will want to have. Look at other artists personial web sites to get an idea of how they have it. A web site is your marketing tool, your portfolio, your CV resume and your contact information. Design your own business card and begin offering your card to the people you know to spread the word.

Good luck and keep in touch.

I am a student graphic designer as well.  I will be graduating from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh - Online Division with a Bachelor's Degree in Graphic Design in March 2010.  I was looking through the different posts and I am seeing that this school isn't a good school?  I am disappointed to read that considering I just spend 3 1/2 years at this school working on various projects.  Right now, I am in the middle of working on my portfolio in between classes.  Sadly, I am having a hard time finding any internships, freelance work, or just an entry-level job in Palm Beach County.  It looks like that I will need to leave this county in order to find some work especially when the economy improves.  I saw that PatM said its better to find a stable job in the design field rather than a freelance job.  My problem is I don't have any professional experience in the field so how am I supposed to get experience if I can't qualify for a job?  I already know that I want to work in the publishing industry but I do understand that a designer can work in any industry.  I really like working with layouts and I am really good at it so I am definitely interested in pursing that aspect.  Is there anyone give me any advice or suggestions on how to prepare for the real work environment or start my career in layouts?
