Posted over 2 years ago This article on a design for an inexpensive needle disposal can reminded me of the Cooper Hewitt show called Design for the other 90%, an exhibition focused on designs for social benefit. I enjoy finely designed objects as much as anyone, but I think that its refreshing to see designers using their talents for something other than super expensive luxury items and working instead on things that re more accessible or important to the masses. What role do you think design should play in developing countries and other areas not typically associated with high design? |

| Posted over 2 years ago Thanks for the question. Design really is everywhere, it is just not as refined and evident in some areas. I feel that design should be studied and taught in the more-developing countries in a way to bring awareness of the discipline as well as to advance the importance, and value, of design. There are talented individuals in all areas of the world. Sometimes a talent isn't found, or nurtured, and it is a loss for everyone. The AIGA has an area of interest called Cross-Cultural Design, and it's all about this issue. Plus, it's about the differences within the cultures and communities. | Posted over 2 years ago alan said: I believe good design can positively influence anything, and it is important that philanthropy (from a design point of view) does not get pushed aside in the interests of the bottom line. Sure there is a training aspect, which sfmike brings up, but that alone is not enough, and it would be nice to see more time, energy, and yes, money put forth to do "pro bono" design to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the "global neighborhood," and at the same time, provide services such as needle disposal. |

| Posted over 2 years ago Recently I heard about Taproot, a non profit group that pairs designers with worthy causes in need of design work. Sounds like a good idea to me, but I think they focus more on graphic design. |

| Posted 2 months ago I think a great design can reach millions and motivate them to do something. Communication design is a very powerful tool. A great design is one that will motivate you to do something you didnt know you wanted to do! |
