Posted 23 days ago How many times have you heard: "graphic designer?......Oh so you can do web sites?" I guess i felt the same way long time ago while studying Graphic Design and people thinking about us like "Artistic Architechts" or "Decorators". Nah, We represent ideas on printed media basically, not so on electronic files. If you study Graphic Design not necessarily have to know programming, although computer is one tool and a very important one. It's just weird to see the Sunday Paper on the Job section requesting a graphic designer with a list of web-based software requirements. Hahaha, makes me laugh; but i don't know, i think about it like just ignorance on their side.

| Posted 23 days ago Whether we like it or not, the world is moving to digital media. To that end, people are looking to capitalize on it early by hiring those who know programming. While Graphic Designers may not necessarily be programmers, it is even more true that prorgammers are seldom good designers. If you look at the predominance of template-type web sites out there, the actual design is becoming less important. As the web grows, so too does it become more homogenized. Is this good or bad; I'm not sure. My advise to designers these days is to learn as much programming as you can. It appears that employers are going back to the days when designers/art directors were "jacks of all trades" with multiple skillsets. As employers are moving to decentralize design and production, you better get on board or get off the train. |

| Posted 23 days ago I couldn't agree more...Every company just assume since your a Graphic Designer you also write java, html...etc...Then you explain that you can layout or design web pages, but maybe not coding. It makes me so frustrated...when I see those ads! So one better...I was trying to find classes just for basic web coding and etc...not to many places offer just that information. I feel like I don't want to spend 70 grand on a web site coding degree...I only want the basics. Then you try to read the coding books...That is so for left brain thinkers...not right brain thinkers. ARGH! |

| Posted 22 days ago ArtA and Nokomis, I feel your anquish. TSmith said "As employers are moving to decentralize design and production, you better get on board or get off the train". In my last job, I was layout artist, web designer/coder, pdf and Word document creator/manipulator, tradeshow coordinator, and price list manager all under the title of Marketing Director. Many companies that I've seen want the person with the most skill sets for the least pay. I did all that for $24,000 a year - gross. I'm struggling to find a job now because I worked for 4 years on the same stuff, pigeonholing my portfolio and finding that I need to refresh myself on Flash, Fireworks and 3D modeling. I guess we really do have to be all things to all people. ARGH is right Nokomis, these are times when our mettle and passion for design are tested. I sincerely hope that we all are able to find and/or keep our spirits high in these trying times of the employer-favored market. |

| Posted 21 days ago My Dear Friends, Thanks for replying. It's not about going against tech or new stuff or web. It's not about saying that paper will never dissapear either. I worked for General Electric ITS 4 years and been close to all that programming stuff, and personally i didn't get attached to it(using Flash and Dreamweaver was fun though).Of course web is a great thing an that's why i'm able to write this and communicate with you. I don't see my life and carreer without it. In my experience, i believe that i can make use of html and programming as a tool to increase my skills and my earnings, but quite honestly i will never consider my self as a "Web Designer" just because i know how to do that job. Learning software and getting skills don't turn you "into" this or that. I just feel that everything has its own place and there's misunderstanding. What you all think? art |

| Posted 21 days ago I totally agree...I wouldn't consider myself as one as well. However in our ever changing work environment you have to flexible and change with the times. I have a thirst for knowledge and seem to always find a way...LOL! BUT, to your orignally point... I wish when employers were posting employment they would not call a "Web Designer" poistion a "Graphic Designer"....when the job thread continually talks about coding, java, etc...and nothing about actually designing pages...LMAO! But here we are and I recieve my daily dose from all my job searches! I am just glad that I was not the only person who recoginized this. |

I just Graduated College one year a go, with a degree in Graphic Design. My professor was talking about how the jobs today are going more digital and that if you say you’re a web designer and graphic designer companies really do expect you to know code for the web. My professor continued to say companies don’t care if u can draw or paint good any more they care if you know code for the web and can put stuff up on the web for them.
I just wish companies when there are trying to hire people. Would hire people that know there specific job, you can build a team and make good quality work then trying to hire one person to do everything and have lower quality work. <!--EndFragment--> |

| Posted 16 days ago I know what you mean! Im searching through Monster at the Multiemedia designer jobs, Im expected to know Flash scripting and Javascript on top of 3-d, motion and graphic design, video and audio editing. I mean I can do some flash and certianly build web sites but come on!!!!! These hiring companies need to tone down some We can no longer just be "artists" in this day in age we have to be a walking art studio who can tap into every genre and style at the whim of the mighty and now elusive dollar. |

After Graduating College I thought I had everything that I needed to know to be a Graphic Designer. After looking for a year you need two to three different degrees to get a job. Having a great portfolio and a Graphic Design Degree dose not help you get a job.
If anyone is still in college take every class that can help you get a job. Start looking at jobs and see what they are asking. That would help people get closer to getting that first job out of college. <!--EndFragment--> |

| Posted 13 days ago Yes...but who can afford that college tuition. Most classes are only geared toward one technical degree. I looked into taking just a couple of classes for scripting etc., and most places I looked into didn't offer just classes...they wanted you to sign up for a degree in order to take just the two classes that I needed. I am already 75g in debt from school...and was going back again to take 3D art and animation (2nd degree - LOL). It just became to expensive. |

| Posted 12 days ago As a practicing designer both web and graphic, let me say I feel your pain. For basics on web scripting such as html, xhtml, css and (I thnk) php go to: www.w3schools.com. This is schooling from the people who write the standards for the web. All studies are free and they have basic certification. Hope this helps. I went back to college after reading the ads you are all writing about. It is unfortunately true that most laypeople do not know the difference between web and graphic designers. I have to believe that this is because there is an entity called a web graphic designer. This still does not alleviate the request of every employer for .net, java, php, mysql...etc. "The diseases that we civilized people labor under most are melancholy and pessimism." Vincent Van Gogh |

| Posted 9 days ago Your welcome and one more thing. Since being back in school (Community College - 90.00 per credit hour so not too bad), I have found out through Profs that you can check out tutorials on YouTube as well. Much luck to all of us!
