I'm 16 years old and a junior in highschool, and it's time to start thinking about college. My goal in life is to start my own line of fashion dolls, (barbie, bratz, moxie, etc.)

What sort of degree should I get that would help me if I try to apply for a job in these areas?

Your goal may change and or evolve. For right now, I think you should concentrate on developing your drawing skills and reading biographies of artists you admire. This will help you, whether you choose a degree in fashion, design or illustration. I looked over your gallery, and I think it shows potential. You should get sketch pads, soft pencils and books on drawing. I highly recommend Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards. Your gallery shows skill using a computer, but you will benefit dramatically from using a sketch pad. I can't stress this enough. Carry that pad everywhere you go and draw, draw, draw. Draw your friend's tennis shoes. Draw the view out your window. Draw your hand. Draw, draw, draw. Strong drawing skills will put you good stead, and light years ahead of your peers when you enter college. It will serve as an excellent foundation no matter what direction you choose, be it fashion, design or illustration. And, remember this always;– don't defeat yourself. Everyone who draws, first had to learn to draw. Drawing is a skill that anyone can learn. In fact, it used to be taught as a matter of course a hundred years ago. There is no such thing as "I don't have the talent" when it comes to drafting. Drawing is a skill that can be learned. Just like anything else worth learning, it takes patience and practice. The more you do it, the better you will be. Draw, draw, draw.

Thank you very much for that this has reall y given me some ideas. Before I just carried my sketchpad around in case I ever became inspired, or thought of something in my mind. Now I know that to be good you also have to sketch what's there in front of you.

Agree completely with the Draw, Draw, Draw aspect. In addition, I'd study package design, some marketing and C.A.D in addition to commercial art to be able to understand some of the business and production aspects behind these characters. I'd think that a Marketing Major with maybe an illustration minor might be the best way to get you into a position to make a go of this. Until then, keep drawing and get as much computer time as you can...Good Luck!
