How does an art degree help?

Is an art degree necessary to be a succesful artist?

Does it make you more employable?

In my country, yes it's important to have an Art Degree to get employed.   Even if the artist is extremely talented, and he doesn't have the degree, he won't get employed, unless he becomes famous and gets an honorary degree for his achievement.  i don't know if it's the same in America, or in any other country.

In graphic design, it's essential to get training and a degree. If you don't have it, you will not be very employable. I had to learn the computer programs InDesign, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, and Photoshop. I don't think I could of taught myself how to properly use those programs without training. So yes, art degrees are worth it!

As for success, that's another story. I'm still trying to break into the field...

I believe an Art Degree is important asset .  I don't think it makes one a better artist, but it certainly opens more doors.  If I had the time, the money and the energy of my past youth, I would go back to school to get my Degree in Art.  But, then I would have to move.  Opportunities for people with Degrees in any of the Fine Arts are few here in El Paso.  Actually, here in El Paso, I think $$$ opens more doors than any degree or talent.

It is essential to have a degree in today's market. Depending on where you live, it might be the only way someone bothers to read your resume. Even if you have a degree, you might need other types of training to supplement your education such as certificates in other fields of work, some form of specialized training in a particular software or a security clearance. It doesn't hurt to have a bit of luck and a few contact through networking. An art degree in not just about learning a particular program and how to draw well. There are concepts, procedures, research, various approaches to an idea and learning how to be a well rounded individual that contributes to being employed. Some of this can be achieve without going to school but you need to have interaction with other people in the field to get an idea about what, how and why to create, keeping up with latest trends and learning how to be efficient. Then there is managing other people from different backgrounds, dealing with different cultures. When you are having trouble moving up in a job or you are not satisfied with your work, it is probably time to go back to school. Be careful about attending schools that lack the proper accreditation from a recognized educational association. You could be wasting your time and money. Just my opinion.

I lost my job as a color technician in the prepress industry. I have 35 years of experience but no degree. Back when I started it didn't matter. Now employers won't even read my resume without one. Also on average a degree will earn you about 65% more over your career.

At my first "artistic" work(1986), where I was "recruited", it was important to be graduated.

Today, since 1995, after I was able successfully to incorporate my life passion for art into my day-to-day business, for me personally my diplomas awarded no longer have any meaning. But anyway I try everyday to renew me knowledges horizons and interest myself in other domains without necessarily trying to change the world...:-)

My clients also come to me not because I'm "three times graduates", but because they think of finding answers to some of his/her questions in my crea-work.

Anyway, I know personally the people with no any degree, but incredible successful and a few personages the another "group" very good in school, but total ZERO in life!

If you can feel yourself as free as air and as joyful as a songbird - then you're the embodiment of optimism and enthusiasm, you have bags of enthusiasm and good humor, and all this makes your life "a day" of great happiness! Even if everything in life is relative, but am sure, that more importantly is the personal qualities and abilities than the diplomas on the wall!

An art degree ,

Will help in several ways ...

1) As you go through your studies you will make contacts and these associations will be valuable for getting references for positions and will give you a broader view of current thoughts in the field of your choice just because you are there participating and hopefully talking amongst your piers.

2) If you get work in a corporation A degree will mean you get several thousands more a year than a non-degree employee even if the other guy is a great artist, your degree shows the employer you have what it takes to stick it out and finish what you start , it also tells the employer you probably have made connections with others who are employed in the industry which may be good for them.

3) You will learn things that it may take an independent artist much longer to learn because you have access to a large body in knowledge when you want it and have a finger on the pulse of your chosen field so you can find the best route for you when you are done. You can use your almamater for further studies and referances in the future long after you are out.

4) Did I mention the money? OH yes I did but it is worth mentioning again !

I've never been sure about the strength of having an art degree versus years of experience. I don't happen to have any degree, but I do have over 30+years as a graphic designer in the printing and publishing industries working on books, etc. To date, that expreience has worked for me. But now .....? I'm not so sure.

Around here EXPERIENCE means more.  If you are already IN the field working and go looking for another job you will get the job quicker than any fresh graduate from whatever so called "esteemed" university you hail from
