I have such a difficulty expressing myself with words.

Maybe thats why im an artist - cant express myself with words to i do it with pictures and paint strokes

or maybe because im an artist I find it hard. - as im so used to expressing myself with pctures, I have got out of practise of using words

I dont think in words I think with thoughts.  I find it so obscure to put my thoughts into words.

I find words and sentances so inaccurate to what I want to say.

Am I the only one out there??

I paint and I write, as of matter of fact I got a painting and a poem published in a literary magazine just this past spring. But I force myself to do them both. I take writing classes and I am starting to take art classes so far I have only taken color composition and one sculpture class. What I found out is that the requirements to be an artist versus a writer are entirely different if I want to follow either one. Right now I am just taking classes not sure I want to struggle towards a degree at this time in my life specially with this two fields, which are very subjective to the expectator or reader.

No you are not the only one. I think it has something to do with the creative side and analytical sides of the brain. Whatever, I see visions in my mind, kind of a like remembering a dream. Most of the detail is obscured. I start from that point and keep working until the vision is achieved. Every time I try to plan a work precisely I fail. It ends up with little creativity. The comp and balance may be technically correct but the overall feel is dead and flat, if that makes sense.

As far as putting my visions in words I'll leave that to the authors of the world.

I think it is because you are a visual person.  That makes it easier to project your thoughts onto a canvas with brushes and paint than to project your thoughts onto paper with pen.  I personally have been known to speak volumes on many subjects and when given the opportunity to express myself in the written word I can be quite eloquent.   By the same token, there are some subjects or feelings that can only be expressed in words.  But, when I am immersed in a drawing or painting, all my energies are thrown into that medium.  I don't even want to participate in casual conversations.

Exactly! When the vision comes it's like sitting next to a stream of creativity. You try to gather as much as you can before it's gone.

somehow i find myself no better way to express myself  than in writing poetry or put  thoughts in writting.

I think many of us  are short when it comes to expressing ourselves verbally  with intellect in tact...maybe it is pychological.

expression of being artist  is a personnal communication of emotion and feelings mostly and has less to do with verbal language other than picking up on  vibration as intuition. It is a powerful tool and gift to have. I surprize people what I know when I am  reader of their character or pick up danger signals.

No, It's not just you that has a hard time communicating in writing or painting or any other kind of self expression. When I was going through my teen years, I had a very rough time handling my emotions. I didn't understand why I felt such heavy thoughts and why I had to deal with bouts of sadness. I couldn't tell my family what I was feeling because I didn't think they would understand, so I started painting and listening to classical music at the same time. This seemed to release some of the things I was feeling and I would feel better when I transferred my emotions onto the canvas. I know, all this sounds really wierd but hang in there, it gets better!   After I finished a painting I would be able to look at it and see what emotions I was feeling and write them down on paper.  I guess I learned to alalyze myself which helped me understand me.    Since those times I have read alot of books on the life of many great artists of the past.  Many of them had very tragic personal lives. Most of them suffered from depression and had a difficult time communicating with others.  It's like artists are given a special gift, an insight into the imagionation, a need to create. Sometimes  this gift of creating can also be a curse. I used to get up in the middle of the night with the need to have to write an idea down because I couldn't sleep until it was completed.  I think to a degree all of us that are blessed with artistic talent have experienced these situations, some more than others. We own the responsibility of our creativity.  We have eachother to communicate with, to praise, to question and to befriend.   Thank you Art bistro for creating this site! I love it!

Absolutely not, Candy. I differ a little as I have a hard time expressing myself in person, but I take off when it comes to the written word and imagery.  I'm told I bury things and they inevitably come out in my words and imagery. I have often thought better that way than saying something I may regret or clobbering someone upside their head. lol

Nope ...I join the party !!! Well, when it comes to writing , I usually find it easy cos Ive been writing ever since im drawing too , so, it's something of a daily routine to me ! but it was never easy when I was a kid. I found it so hard to express my thoughts, ideas and feelings to my family memebers that this shyness and anger ( being unable to express and often bullied by others ) led me to writing !!!! so, with writing, my verbal expressions got better and better ..

So, I don think it's only you, it's rather a phase may be which will eventually lead to some greater self-understanding some day !

Art, I believe enhances our vocabularies and clears a path for our words, thoughts and feelings. In essence, art creates words and words limit art, the process is growth and it matures. Art is a contribution to the whole just as all the other pieces. We are more like the interpreters for others and spokespersons for languages of the heart and eye!

Every artist communicates with art. The difference is the way they communicate with the real world.

You are not the only one. I have a hard time expressing myself in person. I am a kind of shy...When it comes to write  it is much more easier to comunicate! So you are not alone on there!

I know what you mean. I am a visual person, and tend to be quiet in person. But I think it can important for an artist to be able to communicate in writing. Writing is often required related to art projects and papers in art and art history classes at university. Artist statements come up, where you need to be able to express ideas (although it is a bit of a chore for me). Grant writing my be another option for some artists. I think I am a good writer, if a bit slow. On anything lengthy, I often have to go back and re write, try not to repeat words, make it shorter, etc. I also like to read, which helps. Looking at, experience in, and reading about art may help in being able to express yourself in writing ( or verbally ) when looking at other work. Although I know words can seem limiting in relationship to what you may get out of a piece of art.

People that know me think I have more then one personality because I love to paint, I also love to write, and my verbal communication is also good. I had to develop it though because my job demanded it. As an engineering tech I had to be very assertive and I needed to be able to wear many hats and communicate ideas and deal with different groups to get things going. I enjoyed my job but then one day I realized I had stopped painting and that life is too short so I quit my job to be able to write and to be a self taught artist.

i am very goal orientated in all aspects of my life.

I have to kno what i am working towards to be motivated to do anything.

this is great for painting because i have an image in my head that i just work towards making in real life.

but with writing an essay there is noway i can visualise or even have an idea of wot i want the end product to look like so it daunts me as i dont

really kno wot im aiming for or working towards. plus i dont enjoy the process of writing, but the process of painting is so fun to me, so even if it doesnt turn out how i planned in my head, i had enjoyed it along the way.

i gues im scared of the unknown!

There are many genres in writing mine is creative non-fiction, it is the type of story where you know the ending and the things that happen in between but the difficulty is making it look fresh and throwing yourself into it no matter how it makes you look. No explanation or apologies necessary type of thing you just write what has evolved and hopefully a character will evolve or stand out. Writing as in painting is very surprising even though you might have a clear picture in your mind it never quite comes out the way you saw it in your mind.

"Am I the only one ..." that has trouble with words ?

HAHAHAHAHA everyone has trouble with words at one point or other but some people can draw, fortunately, or take pictures BUT let me tell you those get misintrepreted as well ya know ... take the time I was in Mexico, needed a bathroom, hadn't looked at the first simester Spanish book at all and thought "Who needs stinkin words I can draw a bathroom" (the little moon on the door looked perfectly understandable to me) which I did then showed it to a local while making my best gotta go bad face and ya know what ... I had the best time in this quaint little red light house dancing with a full bladder and the ladies all were in hysterics and wanted to pay me for my show until one realized I was having a urea fit and took me out to the out house. I paid her better than any of her clients by the way !

In closing I would say "say what you feel in words or drawings/paintings but just know most people , even other artists , won't understand what you meant anyway" and have fun trying !
