There has never been a struggle for artists to create the images, sounds and ideas. It is all there and yet the means by which to live often take priority.

Our culture has become one of "must have" and success is often measured by what we have ,not what we are or what we know or what we can do.Why is Walmart so successful? It provides anything any one would want.Food, drugs, clothing, nick nacks etc. (though I've never found anything worth reading there)...It's so we can say , I have this or I have that.Quality is not important, quantity is.

The solution:If you really are an artist you will find a way to make your art work for you.You may not be able to drive a new car,or have a lot of toys, but you can satisfy your your soul and spirit.Even Jamie Wyeth paints in a cardboard box as a studio.Van Gogh only sold 2 paintings wile he was alive.Rembrant died a pauper in a gutter.Mozart was buried in an unmarked grave. What stood the test of time?what they did, not what they had.

Live simply my friends, abandon material things, shop at Goodwill, drive an old car,but stay warm and make art.

There is an old New England saying:

"Eat it up,Use it up,make do or do without"

If that doesn't work for you, then get a day job,and make your art when you can.........God Bless

Mr. Thomas, I could not have said it better than that. I am looking for work as a graphic designer. I do not aim to get rich, just pay the bills. I am physically unable to do the hard labor jobs I did for 20 years so I went to school so hopefully I could work my brain and give my brawn a much needed rest. I told my boyfriend, “If you want to get rich you are with the wrong girl, because when I have extra and see someone with out I help them out”. That is why I feel we are here. I enjoy doing my art and do it all the time even though I have not found a way to make money on it yet. I feel there is a art job out there for me. I do not just pray for a job. I pray for the right job. A job that fits me well enough that I am not only able to pay my bills but help the community and have job security. If any one can find me that job the Lord can. I put out applications and resumes and keep the faith that God will open doors in the right places. God bless and keep everyone, Faye

I may be poor, I might have annoying medical bills to pay off, I might never be able to afford new books to read, and certainly I don't often get as many delicious things as I could want but I have my imagination, my art, and a very loving boyfriend.  As long as I keep trying for work in the art world and in part time I know I'll make it!

I love to make illustrations, especially of animals. A friend of mine suggested creating a business in which I do illustrations of other people's pets for a fee. It sounds like a good idea for something to try while the job market is running on empty.

I quit my job last year, I had been there almost 15 years, I was paid very well as an engineering tech. I realized one thing that when we say tomorrow, when I retired, we are saying to much because tomorrow is not promised to us. Security is an invention and our bodies, that once were strong, decay.

I went in to have knee surgery and found I have severe arthritis and this is when I figured out my tomorrow was here. After recuperating from my surgery I walked into my manager's office and I quit.

I am having a hard time adjusting to having no money to throw away, basically, but I am also having a blast rediscovering the real world outside of a protected engineering community. I am finding out more things about me and I am experimenting with writing and sculpture. It is a brand new day.

Live every day as if it was your last day on earth.

Have a great day,

Patsy
