Description:

To Kill a Mockingbird is a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Harper Lee published in 1960. Upon its release, it was instantly successful and has become a classic of modern American fiction. The novel is loosely based on the author's observations of her family and neighbors, as well as an event that occurred near her hometown in 1936, when she was 10 years old. The novel is renowned for its warmth and humor, while still dealing with the serious issues of rape and racial inequality. Atticus Finch, the narrator's father, has served as a moral hero for many readers, and a model of integrity for lawyers. One critic explained its impact by writing, "[i]n the twentieth century, To Kill a Mockingbird is probably the most widely read book dealing with race in America, and its protagonist, Atticus Finch, the most enduring fictional image of racial heroism.

When I first read this book, ti was right up there with the movie "12 Angry Men". A great depiction of a very touching subject, but portrayed as it was way back in the early 1900's. I love it.

One of my favourite stories and a great classic. If you didn't read it in school, read it now.

This book is obviously a classic in American liturature. It was timeless, with humor and warmth as well as dealing with the very serious issues of rape and racism. It could have just as easily taken place in present day as well as more than 70 years ago. This is one of those books that I have read more than once.

I had to read this book for Grade 11 english. It was actually pretty good, compared to the other books they make us read here in Canada.

I think that what makes To Kill A Mockingbird such a success is the life that Harper Lee gave to each character. In spite of the sensitive subject of the story, I was able to love each and every character. Not only is she a great story teller but she has a profound understanding of the "human condition".

I saw the movie, and read some of the book. I might have read all of it and forgotten that I read it. Well, it's obviously a great book, since it won the prize.
