I am an avid fan of the Grumbacher Pretest series of oil paints and have compared most of the primary colors with the Winsor Newton primaries. For my money, Grumbacher wins hands down. The Pretest colors have a higher concentration of pigment and therefore produce bettter mixes. A simple test to prove this is to try mixing Grum. cadium yellow light with ultramarine blue to produce green. Then try a mixture of the same two colors in the Winsor brand. You will see two results: the first is that the Winsor yellow is not the same (it's closer to cad yel.pale.) and the second is that it takes more Winsor yellow to mix the same shade of green. Now try adding a touch of white to each mixture and watch how easily the Winsor brand washes out. That's the difference the amount of paint pigment makes and how well your mixtures will hold true. This same test could be applied to other brands. Oil paints can get expensive especially the primary colors. However, in the long run, the higher the concentration of pigment the more cost affective the paints will be.
