I began using DAZ several months ago - I was looking for an affordable way to begin a new direction in character creation. It's quite user-friendly, and you can edit the interface to more suit your needs as you progress.
There are some capabilities that Poser has over DAZ (such as the material room, dynamic clothing/hair, joint-rigging and advanced shading options), but I have seen equally amazing and realistic renders from both applications. And word is they are working to implement some of these options in later releases. DAZ is consistently updating it's program, as of date it is at Version 2.2.35.
DAZ is a great start for beginners in 3D modeling, and with content that is interchangeable with Poser it makes it a very powerful and useful tool.

I've worked with DAZ/Studio since it was in beta, and have seen its features really grow and mature over the various versions. Having worked with both DAZ/Studio and Poser, I have to say that I find DAZ/Studio much more user friendly. Not only is it easier to work with, but you can't beat the price, free! I use this software about as often to render, as to just morph up and pose characters and props, which I then export as .obj files. I in turn import these props into Bryce for placing within a scene to render there. This software is an essential tool in my digital art palette.
