Fraebel studio announced today that President Obama has commissioned thirty-four “Glass Tree” sculptures created by world renowned flamework glass artist Hans Godo Fraebel. The exquisite glass sculptures will be presented to world leaders at the G20 Summit in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 24-25 September 2009. For more information and high resolution pictures, go to: www.frabel.com/obama-gift.
“I am honored that President Obama has selected my art for his gift presentation,” stated Fraebel. He added, “The symbolism of ‘Glass Tree’ mirrors so well the overarching tone and objective of the G20 Summit.” In describing the art gift, Fraebel commented that all of the Tree’s leaves point upward symbolizing success and cooperation; the Tree’s pinnacle shape symbolizes unity and movement towards a common goal; trees are a symbol of strength, wisdom and endurance; glass, a beautiful yet fragile material, symbolizes the fragility of freedom, liberty and our environment; and beneath the Tree’s black wooden base is a 1/2" stainless steel plate representing Pittsburgh’s former steel industry that is moving to new, environmentally-friendly products, such as heat blocking glass panes created by PPG, a $16 Billion company headquartered in Pittsburgh.
President Obama encountered Fraebel’s glass sculptures at the Fraebel Botanical Exhibition currently on display at the Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh (www.phipps.conservatory.org). Fraebel was invited as a special guest at the G20 Summit opening event on September 24th.

From the opposite side of the aisle I have to agree with Wicklow, Flamed, blown, or whatever, I really don't see what this has to do with the G20 who are presumed to be serious world leaders with a serious agenda and this thing looks like a toy which has nothing to do with the issues. LBJ is the Hallmark of landmark social reform, and it's his administration that coined the saying:Art is for mans sake, but if he were the host of such a session the most you would get is an ink pen, and only if you were quick to sign something useful. The Summit is not the place to imitate the Oscars, dawn evening suites and pose behind trinkets. The Constitution says useful Arts, so set the example and send out some starving photographer or other visual artist to put the issues right there in front where they belong. I'm sorry Mr Obama but the first 100 days are long gone, and here in the face of depression you pander to the world renown for trifles, in the name of :Change That You Can Believe!

Prior Republican administrations have greatly downplayed the importance of the art -- as though it is not a worthy profession. Without art, beauty would be lacking all around us. I applaud this move. Perhaps the National Endowment will get back ALL of the funding that it was forced to relinquish, and art will once more be trumpeted as a major component of educating our youth.

I think that the government spending money on art is a great deal more productive than spending it on giving the failing auto industry big breaks, plus this amounts to maybe half a penny of your tax money, geeze.

You have got to be kidding me? Who is paying for this? Well I bet it is not Obama! It is the tax payers, do we get a choice? Oh Hell no! Is there anything he won’t spend tax payer’s dollars on? We are so far in the hole what is a few more hundred thousand dollars? If Obama feels so strongly about giving these as gifts he can break out his own wallet! I am sure we are taking care of our share of expenses in this meeting just for the bill for security!
