#7 “No.”

You should never say “no” to a project out of fear of the challenge.

Okay, I won't say how many of these I've said in the past or if I've said them at all. Still #1 advise KYMS & listen to the client.

loved it! i like the cautious tone you suggest we designers must show at all times. might sound obvious but we really do tend to forget our business faces and the prefessional image we should radiate.
nice!

Very useful and informative. This was much better than your "Things a Designer Should Never Wear" article.

"you have bad taste". Its a hard thing for me not to say to a client. I never have but I feel like I want to every time. Why cant we just slap the client and say, "Listen, your paying me because I am the one that knows what looks good and why"...haha. I know its not as cut and dry as that sounds, but I would love some tips on letting clients down easy when it comes to their contributed ideas. Seems like every logo Ive done freelance the client has asked for an Eagle or an ethnic circle of people holding hands, or a globe....UGH.

I agree on this one. I work for a company and we are striving to help the client still do their design projects but with being more cost effective in mind. The customer appreciates your efforts for this and will then think twice before considering someone else.

For several years I have been known as the "go to person for large scale posters." This has been great because now my clients have been asking "what else can I do?" (lots of stuff!)

Excellent advice! This is something I have always done and it has saved me a whole heap of headaches as the project comes to a close . . .

An addendum to #3: The old green-glass Coca-Cola bottle was all of those things, "old, awful, and outdated". The one thing it really was though - was effective and completely identifiable throughout the world! That is the principal reason behind a logo and/or symbol.
Always watch what you say, of course, but more importantly for a re-design project, be sure you fully understand the value of the client's existing identity before trying to sell them on a change.
