Hazel Dooney: A Courageous Uncompromising and Successful Visual Artist

What does it take to be successul as a visual artist? Most of us, including visual artists, make our choices tempered by other demands and insecurities. There are always reasons why we didn't follow our dreams. Then there are others who overcome huge obstacles and personal demons and who demand to be taken seriously on their own terms.They refuse to compromise their art purely to advance their career. Such a person is Hazel Dooney. Not only has Dooney fashioned a stellar career making controversial art on her terms, she has grown an international collector base without giving in the traditional gallery system. Most of us are not up to taking on such difficult challenges. We give in and do it the easy way. And, most of us are not battling to keep control of our careers without also battling Dooney's potentially debilitating bi-polar disorder. When you put all that together, it is near impossible not to admire the success Hazel Dooney has earned for herself.
