About Me: Valerie Arena is a relatively new artist, jewelry maker and photographer. After fifteen years in corporate America, ten years as a teacher/professor, and 19 years raising her two children, time has finally come to let some creativity pour forth. Acrylic is the preferred medium for Valerie. Her focus is broad and changes based on what is occurring in her personal and business life. Valerie Arena has lived in Wilkes Barre, PA since 2007 and previously resided in Arizona for thirty plus years. A note from Valerie: I'm a latecomer to the art world when it comes to producing art. I try to draw/paint frequently, more often I am making jewelry. I have been an avid photographer for most of my teen/adult life. I love photographing nature and pets. Until recently I never shared my photographs with anyone except immediate family. I love using mixed media, fibers, broken things, found things. I incorporate a lot of weird things into my work, for example, I have a recent work that I had an earthenware 4" square candle holder and I loved the color of it so much I decided I wanted to incorporate it into a work and so I smashed it with a hammer to random size bits, worked in some modeling paste, some coppery pigment and formulated the background/base for my painting. (I'll post it soon). It came out very interestingly and has a very cool looking texture to it. I love the random surprises of art. I am very affected by the people and environment around me, sometimes things have been so crazy lately that my creativity is paused or halted for a little while. I am emotionally wrapped around my art and thus little upsets here and there change the mood and direction of my art. I started making jewelry when my son was in a near-fatal auto accident this past March, there were 6 people in the car, 3 came out ok, my son and a young baby were both seriously injured, my son moreso than the young baby (6 mos. hosp.),my son suffered tbi, hole in skull, facial disfiguration. He is healing, but has a lot of mental and emotional healing that will be far more difficult than the physical. There was one fatality in the accident, his girlfriends sister. Sometimes my work will represent things that I know or don't know yet (see: Tucumcari Premonition). Jewelry making is something I do when I am not painting, it keeps my mind designing and creating. I love art, seeing it, creating it, embracing it. I am honored to be able to be a part of it.
