- About Me
- I'm a fine artist, creating conceptual, symbolic paintings in the traditional drawing-based manner. A BRIEF CHRONOLOGY: 1964 to 1972: Pre-adult period. I did a pencil drawing of a horse when I was ten and had a reputation as an artist thereafter. 1973 to 1993: Surrealist period. Some good art was produced, but before going back to school my work was limited and amateurish. 1994 to 1999: Photorealist phase. Returned to college at age 40 to get degrees. I got smarter and improved myself. 2000 to 2005: Traditional realist period. I trained in classical drawing and painting. 2006- present: Synthesis: During my MFA period, I worked on assimilating and hybridizing my disperate parts into a cohesive whole. GOALS: I am determined to make my mark. How deep that mark will be is not yet known, but I will continue striving to produce that one great masterpiece that will define me. Like most everybody else, I've wasted years working at stupid jobs to survive, and due to economic woes, may continue to do so- but only my art defines me. I'm glad I returned to school. Decades after graduating high school, and 7 years after my BFA, I finally got my MFA. Besides painting, I love teaching. It was so rewarding helping college art students draw better. I'm good at it. FEARS: 1) Not being able to survive this recession scares me. Not being able to find a job teaching after spending (and borrowing) all that money to finish my education terrifies me. 2) I fear dying before making my mark in art more than death itself. All I can do is keep trying. No matter how lonely I become, no matter how often my work and I are treated with cold indifference, even in the face of poverty and eviction, I shall carry on. I must go on because only art reveals what's best in me: love for the world, thanks for being alive, and faith that something greater exists. INTERESTS: I'm interested in everything under the sun: in life and death, hope and despair, truth and the pursuit of happiness-of history, her story, your story, and our story. I'm interested in knowing that humanity shall go on trying to capture all the music, poetry, vision and light that our eyes and ears and lips can know. I'm interested in that which survives beyond the death of our cells-something we share more permanent than the pyramids-qualities that are invisible like the colors of the rainbow hiding in sunlight!
- Hobbies:
- Reading, Photography, Watching Films, Watching TV, collecting antiques, going to museums, and gardening. (Art is not a hobby!)
- Favorite Movies:
- I have at least a hundred favorites: movie classics, historical drama, mystery, science fiction and intelligent comedy preferred.
- Favorite TV Shows:
- I prefer movies, news and documentaries , but I feel I watch too much TV and must reduce my daily dose of it.
- Favorite Music:
- Eclectic but mostly older stuff: Doo-wop, Charles Mingus, Johannes Brahms, Frank Zappa, Aaron Copeland, Howlin Wolf, Igor Stravinsky, etc.

Congratulations Bob on your MFA! I believe you will find a way. You are a survivor by nature and have more talent and skill in your little finger not to be a success. Good luck with your quest and again congratulations. You are an inspiration.

This month (May, 2009) I earned my MFA at age 54. Since both my parents are dead and I have almost no family, I decided to skip the commencement ceremony- but I made it! Congrats?
My God! I (along with the entire Class of '09) have graduated into the worst economic climate since the Great Depression. Now, over 60K in debt, I am applying like mad to local universities to work in any adjunct faculty position.
Fat chance! Looks like all of us will be lucky to get a job flipping hamburgers at McDonalds or collecting shopping carts at Wal-mart. I don't mind. I've done that kind of work before- but I didn't need a Masters Degree for it. Now we can compete for work with the high school drop-outs and illegal aliens.
The sad part is: for every hour I work at some place like Wal-mart, I won't be painting. Think of all the quality paintings that will NOT be created by a skilled, trained painter like me while I work behind a cash register for $8.50 per hour.
