- About Me
- My paintings proceed from simple beginnings. I turn over a stone to examine the soft colors of lichen, and surprise a salamander in his secret home under the rock. Dragonflies dart past, flashing brightly in the sun; dark crows call hoarsely as they soar in the sky above. Fragments of nature, show an interesting world. Ideas slip into my mind, grow, change and finally emerge as a finished work.
I prefer drawing but recently I have gravitated towards working with watercolor and oils. I currently work with textured paper, found objects and to those I add layers of color. The use of textured papers and found objects help to achieve a textured under-painting, which I use to begin my creative process. This building of layers is a methodical, meditative process that helps connect me to my subject matter.
The passage between the idea and the finished work is often like solving a puzzle - try this, fit that in, take that out, until the picture in my mind is there in front of me. Other times it is full of unexpected discoveries, new twists and turns, so the painting when finished is quite different from the original idea.
When someone sees the painting and laughs at the joke, or is pleased by the colors and forms, the process is complete and I can start working on the next puzzle.
