- About Me
- www.melissacalderon.com In growing with my recent work, I have taken an interest in engaging the comfortability factor that Latinos have with embracing certain stereotypical roles and how those roles are seen within the context of society at large. Whether masculine or feminine in their nature, an acceptance and even touting of certain stereotypes has now become synonymous with the “Latino identity”; a precipice for self realization as well as the outward acceptance of societal ideologies that become intrinsic part of Latino culture, regardless of the negative connotations they invoke. Stating that Latinos are willingly embracing stereotypes is a faux pas unto itself, but growing up and living in New York affords a unique opportunity to examine how American assimilation has changed the inner views of Latino culture to embrace those stereotypical opinions as truths; all in the sake of holding onto our culture that is forcibly getting melded into the mainstream. I am interested in this amalgamation of my culture and its overall affect on Latino culture and community.
