Questions for Gloria DeVrieze:
How did you start out in art?
I’ve been “arting” since before I could pick up a writing utensil! I can’t say that I remember, but I’ve photos of myself at three years old to prove it, standing on a dining room chair, squishing colorful fingers together and printing them on paper. I always valued art as a kid. I took every art class my highschool had to offer which exposed me to many different mediums, then I went to college, where I discovered my love and knack for photography.
Who is your favorite artist?
My favorite photographers are Imogen Cunningham and Edward Weston. My favorite artists are Louise Nevelson, Audrey Kawasaki, Dale Chihuly, and Raymond Pettibon.
What is your work about?
I like to try and take things that people see everyday and look at them in a different light. I also like to photograph the honesty in people. I like to try to get down to the “nitty gritty” so to speak, of a subject, which is usually up close and personal.
Do you have any advice for fellow artists?
Listen to contructive critisism! You never want to hear “I like it.” Because that doesn’t help you. In fact, in college, when critiquing others’ work, if we said “I like it” points were taken off. Always look for what makes the piece successful or what doesn’t in terms of the elements and principals of design. Learning how to correctly critique others’ art will help you to become a better artist. Funny how it works, isn’t it?

This piece reminds me of the movie "The English Patient." The dunes mimicked a woman's body.
