Top Budget Art and Design Vacation Cities

Jill Hare, Kevin Powers, Valerie Atkisson

#1: Phoenix, Arizona

Phoenix, AX

Phoenix is hot during the summer, no doubt. This summer though, the art is cooling things down a bit with two shows: Phoenix Art Museum is exhibiting Medievalism: Fashion’s Romance with the Middle Ages. Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art‎ shows us its sense of humor with “Seriously Funny”. Humor helps us to understand the world. “Seriously Funny” brings together ten dynamic artists who show us how to laugh at some of life’s most challenging issues.

Taliesin West is the destination for designers that go to Phoenix. It is the location of Frank Lloyd Wright’s winter home and school in the desert from 1937 until his death in 1959 at the age of 92. During his lifetime, Wright continually altered and added to the complex of buildings, all of which were constructed by students. Many of Wright’s most famous buildings were designed in the drafting room at Taliesin West, including the Guggenheim Museum in New York City.

Evenings are the best time to go gallery hopping to beat the heat. In Phoenix galleries and artist studios are open to a big bash on the first Friday of the month. In Scottsdale every Thursday night galleries are open for viewers.

Many also take advantage of being able to drive the Apache Trail, stopping along scenic route to visits a number of sites such as the Lost Dutchman State Park, Goldfield Ghost Town, and Theodore Roosevelt Dam.
