Fashion Designers

Fashion designers create clothing, accessories, shoes, and all other things that you wear every day. They must know how to work with several different fabrics and textiles and have an understanding of fashion trends and sizing.

In 2008, fashion designers held about 22,700 jobs according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, with growth projected to be about 1 percent between 2008 and 2018. Competition for jobs is strong, since many are attracted to the position. As more people look for affordable fashion, job opportunities may be higher among designers for apparel and shoe wholesalers.

Median annual wages of fashion designers were $61,160 in 2008. Median annual wages in the industries employing the largest numbers of fashion designers are: Management of companies and enterprises ($72,560); Cut and sew apparel manufacturing ($66,000); Apparel, piece goods, and notions merchant wholesalers ($61,600); and Specialized design services ($59,560).
