Graphic Design Resume Keywords

Experience: Employers, dates, and specific duties are a good start. Where applicable, make sure you include titles that move the needle, like Sr. Graphic Designer, Web Developer, Creative Director and Web Designer. Don’t just stop with the title, though. Remember that rich keywords are the way to get noticed. You may think writing this is enough:

“Graphic Designer.”

However, it will benefit you much more to describe your experience like this:

“Creative graphic designer of corporate web pages, business cards and 5-color direct mail postcards.”

Education: Obviously you’ll want to list the degrees you’ve earned, which school(s) you went to, and when. If your degree wasn’t related to graphic design, list artistic endeavors you undertook while in school or any relevant clubs and organizations you were a member of. Don’t forget any certifications you earned either while in school or afterward.

Software/Technical Skills: This is absolutely key. If you have experience using any of the software listed in the job description, make sure you mention it. Examples include Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, QuarkXpress, Final Cut Pro, Flash, InDesign — even PowerPoint. Also useful to note is whatever experience you have with technical languages such as HTML/CSS, MySQL, Javascript and others.

Interests/Background: This is optional (and some of this can go in your cover letter), but it helps to give hiring managers a taste of your personality. Include clubs and organizations that show off your involvement in the design community, along with other artistic pursuits that prove graphic design isn’t just a way to make a buck, it’s your passion. If you’re bilingual, mention that as well.

Remember, each resume should be different, depending on the job in question. You want to position yourself as the perfect answer to what the employer is asking for. So, make sure your resume is creative but still targeted enough to get noticed by whatever scanner (or — if you’re lucky — real live person) sees your resume. Only then will your beautiful, exquisite portfolio get the attention it deserves.
