10 Worst Time Wasters at Work

Tania Khadder

Time flies when you’re wasting it
These days, no one can afford to waste time at work.

Thanks to widespread downsizing, workloads are piling up. Unfortunately, extra hours in the day are not.

Maximizing your time at work can mean the difference between leaving at a reasonable hour (i.e. holding onto your sanity) and staying late unnecessarily. You’ve got a life outside work. Don’t you want to live it?

There are countless ways you waste time on the job.

Sometimes, it’s unavoidable. Other times, it can be overcome with a minor shift in your approach. Either way, the first step to addressing time wasters is to identify them.

Here are the 10 most common time sucks and some tips on how to defeat them.

As for multitasking, I heard on television recently that a person who is driving while texting can be as dangerous because of distraction as one who is driving intoxicated. That doesn't say much for effectiveness during multitasking.

Nice reminder, especially for people who haven't paid much attention to time wasters before. I'm sure some will debate whether these are really the top 10, but in my experience, everybody's situation is different. It is focused mainly on conditions in general office work; the time management challenges designers (in many fields) are facing are in many ways significantly different from those addressed in the bulk of the time management literature. For those who might want to inquire a little more about those designers' time management challenges, their sources and remedies, my book "Time Management for Architects and Designers" (Norton 2003) presents a more comprehensive discussion. Its examples are drawn mainly from my experience in architecture, but many people in various other fields tell me it has been quite helpful for them -- in some sense, we are all designers, aren't we? As being self-employeed freelance, some of the places I've been. The biggest waste of time is having a meeting to decide what is going to be discussed in a meeting with the management who requires that both productive meetings be required by all apartment heads. Then at the management meeting pre-posting for the apartment heads to stay in there departments and sent a represenative from there department. A questionaire is passed out asking how there time can be used more effinciently to increase time spent in the workplace.Duh...?
