Eraser-Free World

Pencils have two ends — an end that can create and an end that can destroy. When drawing technical, observational or realistic things (think models), artist can get into the habit of drawing, then erasing, drawing again, doubting and then ultimately erasing. Warning: Erasers have become the ultimate comfort zone! Why? Because artists know that mess-ups can be quickly corrected. And we’re quick — sometimes too quick — to grab it.

Well, it’s time to let go of it. Sorry. Cut it off, tape it over or buy pencils without erasers. It’s time to go without.

Now dare yourself to draw, even technical sketches, without an eraser. This might sound crazy, but the process will challenge you to draw in new ways. It will teach you to sketch in different shades and clean up so called “mistakes” with your imagination — not an eraser. For example, so what if you didn’t make a line exactly straight? Use cross-hatching to shade the area or use thinner and thicker lines to make the drawing more alive and vibrant.

Think about it — if you had an eraser, you may have erased a masterpiece even before you created it!
