Try something new. If you paint, try building a clay sculpture. Go in the opposite direction from what you normally do. If you’ve mostly been doing realistic portraits, try doing something surreal and out of the ordinary. It’s the base of being an artist. Being open minded. You can find inspiration in yourself by just doing something differently.

When you do go on your adventure for inspiration, it can be a good idea to always carry a sketchbook or even a camera to take note of what you come across. Inspiration can happen anywhere and at anytime. If you find a passage in a book you really like, highlight it. See a painting at the art museum? Sketch it out. Found some really cool artistic images on the web? Drop and drag onto your desktop and keep it in a folder of creative ideas. Find anything and everything that may trigger an emotion or spark an idea. The search is endless and there’s no reason to stop.

Whatever route you choose to take to find inspiration, it’s important to keep track of every idea. If you stumble upon something brilliant in the middle of the night, write it down! If you pass by something on a walk, take a picture. You’ll be kicking yourself if you forget that awesome idea.
