5 Steps to Becoming an Architect

5 Steps to Becoming an Architect

Steve Berman | Art Bistro

Step Five: Get Licensed/Certified

So you’ve taken the classes, earned the degrees, completed the internship, and passed the exam — you’re almost there. The last step to becoming a practicing architect is to get licensed in your state, which is done by submitting your credentials to your state’s board. Often Architects must take continuing education classes to stay licensed.

Alternatively, you can earn a voluntary certification from the National Council for Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB), which allows Architects to obtain reciprocal licenses from the 54 U.S. states and jurisdictions that belong to the council. According to the BLS, about one-third of all licensed architects are also certified by the NCARB.

Who said doodling is a waste of time?

Many artistic folks spend time during classes doodling in their notebook. If that sounds all too familiar, why not make your passion work for you? Architecture is a field that takes artistic creativity and combines it with real-world utilitarianism. Architects make the world a safer, more efficient and a prettier place for all. For those patient and driven enough to complete the journey from college to certification, an extremely rewarding career awaits.
