Steve Berman | Art Bistro

Lots of careers can make a difference in a community, but none quite in the same way as the field of architecture. An architects’ main responsibility is to design functional buildings, but that’s just scratching the surface.

Architects are vital in the way that cities, towns and individual buildings look and operate. They need to be able to understand building codes and materials, take into account electrical and plumbing needs, work with clients to determine their requirements while at the same time creating their vision through sketches and detailed drawings.

While that sounds like a lot of hats for one person to wear, it can be well worth it. Besides having one of the most vital jobs that exists in the fields of construction and urban planning, architects are also handsomely compensated for the work they do — with a median annual income of $70,320 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. With that in mind, it should come as no surprise that architecture is an incredibly competitive field, even though the BLS predicts that it will grow faster than the average for all occupations through 2018.
